KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 4 − Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim today dismissed talks of him being made a Cabinet minister if Pakatan Rakyat (PR) takes over Putrajaya in the next elections.
Yesterday, PKR deputy president Azmin Ali sparked off speculation of Khalid leaving his Selangor Mentri Besar post to take on a federal position in the event of a PR win.
Azmin, who is Gombak MP, reportedly said that Khalid’s corporate expertise would be better utilised at the federal level, rather than being limited to just one state.
But Azmin also said that PR has not decided on the matter yet.
“This is (a) personal opinion, not Pakatan Rakyat’s view,” Khalid told reporters at the Parliament lobby today, adding that Azmin should not be blamed.
“Azmin’s purpose is to show the capability that exists in Keadilan. His purpose (is to show) Keadilan is not just Datuk Seri Anwar (Ibrahim), Azmin, Saifuddin (Nasution) and he also said our purpose is to boost the morale of Keadilan supporters.”
“For me, also, I think there’s good for me because people can accept me (to) work at state (level) and also at national (level).
“So, I think it’s not a problem. If both doesn’t happen, it’s not a problem for me,” Khalid said.
Khalid is seen to be a political novice, but a seasoned corporate leader.
He was a member of the National Productivity Council and has broad experience in the corporate industry; he was chief executive of the state-run investment fund Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) from 1979 to 1994 and was also CEO of plantations giant now known as Kumpulan Guthrie Berhad from 1995 to 2003.
He had joined PKR and ran in Election 2008 where he took the Ijok state seat, beating Umno’s Satuk Moamed Sayuti Said by a majority of 1,920 votes. The victory catapulted him into the pole position of Malaysia’s wealthiest state.
Khalid is also Bandar Tun Razak MP.
