Pay cut motions 'mock' standing orders
Dewan Rakyat Speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia today disallowed ministerial pay cut motions from three opposition MPs, saying that those token cuts are "tainted with mockery" and an "abuse" of Standing Order 66 (9).
Furthermore, Pandikar argued that such a motion, if it is tabled and passed in the house, will also create legal problems as the pay of a minister is the minister's privilege and the House has no business to take it away from him or her.
His decision, he said, is based on his research into the parliamentary practices of other Westminster-style Parliaments.
