Police task force to deal with 'phantom voters' trouble

KUALA BESUT The Royal Malaysian Police will activate its special task force in tackling problems like 'phantom voters' and preventing buses carrying rival party supporters from passing through if these are reported to happen in the Kuala Besut state seat by-election on July 24.

Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order director Salleh Mat Rasid said although no such incidents have been reported so far, the police were ready to act fast to deal with these through the special task force.

Speaking at a news conference in Kuala Besut today, he added that police could beef up its strength throughout the by-election process but this would depend on the need.

"We have enough manpower and are ready to deal with any eventuality in this by-election but we will add (manpower) if the need arises.

"Usually, if there is tension or commotion on polling day, we have our own strategy to deal with this to ensure a smooth voting process."

Salleh said since nomination day until now, the situation has been under control and hoped that it would remain that way without any disturbance.

Meanwhile, police are investigating three reports received during the campaign period involving the torching of flags, holding ceramah without a permit and one made by DAP national chairperson over a statement claimed him to be seditious.

Salleh also reminded supporters of the contesting political parties in the by-election not to create provocation and to apply for a valid permit to hold any ceramah.

He said the voters should not be afraid to go out to vote and if they faced any problem or threat in carrying out their responsibility, they should immediately contact the police for action to be taken.
