You can give voters ‘duit raya’ and it’s not vote buying
FREE YOURSAY ‘Even if it is proven that it is money for votes, the EC will say it is not the candidate dishing out the money.’
Voters seen lining up for cash at village chiefs' houses
Kim Quek: Even if the cash being dished out is for voters’ transport costs, it is an illegal practice under Section 20 (1) of the Election Offences Act 1954.
And the culprits - both the giver and taker - upon conviction in a sessions court, shall be liable to a fine of RM5,000 (Section 27).
Hence, the Election Commission (EC) and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) should immediately move in to investigate and make arrests if illegality is proven.
P Dev Anand Pillai: As long as we have the ‘peasant and country bumpkin’ mindset which is ingrained through the education system, nothing will change.
Corruption or anything else that we may term it to be is part and parcel of the political culture, which has been nurtured into politicians by political schools of thought founded by their predecessors.
Money from the coffers of the federal kitty is for the superior party to use as it sees fit. Corruption is the side business or ‘cari makan’ skills which government servants are trained at when they first start work so that when they retire, they would have amassed enough.
The problem is they rob us, the rakyat, through taxes to fill up the federal kitty.
FairGame: Umno is beyond redemption. Outright blatant corruption to achieve their deceitful goals. Even if it is proven that it is money for votes, the EC will say it is not the candidate dishing out the money, and MACC will remain impotent.
Well, so what, since their menteri besar (MB) already said it is all right to practice cronyism.
2zzzxxx: As I have said many times, when you are with Umno, you are above all laws. They are now giving out bribes in broad daylight. Now you can give voters money and say it for 'duit raya', 'bus fare', etc, and it is all right.
YouAreNotAlone: There’s one thing that I don't understand about the people of Kuala Besut. Don't they have brains to think why the pro-BN is giving handouts of RM50 to RM200 to them?
How come that pro-BN individual is only giving them money now? Did they receive such handouts as ‘duit raya’ every year from him? How come this individual can be so rich as to give handouts of this amount to so many people?
Have the voters ask how this individual can be so rich while the rest of the people there are so poor? Maybe the poor people think by following what this rich person is doing (vote for BN), they shall become as rich as he is one day?
This I can say to them, carry on dreaming. Let the BN control your destiny for another four to five years. Stay poor always.
Ferdtan: It looks like Bersih 4.0 protest rally is inevitable. That will be the only way to get rid of the biased and useless EC panel members.
MACC is also the same, seen as a branch of the Umno party. Nothing has and will change whenever BN is desperate to stay in power.
Therefore Bersih or Pakatan Rakyat leaders must find new ways or initiatives to force them to change. From the way elections are held, there is no way Pakatan can ever dream of taking over Putrajaya, not now or in the future.
Joe Lee: Keep them poor, and keep them stupid. This is the very successful Umno 1Malaysia Bodoh policy in action.
Brainwash the civil servants via the National Civics Bureau (BTN); create the Chinese/Indian bogeyman. And when it comes to election time, get the government machinery and government money to guarantee a win.
Umno may sometimes be stupid, but its recipe has worked for 50 years. So full marks to Umno for successfully hoodwinking all the si-bodohs (that’s you and me) for 50 years.
Hot Khong: Don't expect the EC to do anything about this. They will say that there is no proof. Even with all the photos in Malaysiakini.
Bash: No matter if it is duit raya or not, money doesn't fall from heaven. This is corruption to the core and all condone it. Malaysia is beyond help.
Cantabrigian: Stop blaming the politicians for giving bribes. These guys would do just anything to get your vote, even sell their own mothers. It's the fault of the voters who are selling the future of the country for RM50.
Strait Settlement: Elections, on a monthly rolling basis, should be held with direct debit to voters’ bank accounts.
No more standing around conspicuously in the hot Malaysian sun. Even the Umno paymasters can continue their holidays abroad as everything can be done with a click on their mouse.
Paul Warren: Happy Hari Raya you folks! To both givers and takers. - Malaysiakini
