IGP floats 'fell into sea' theory over missing guns
Far from being a waterproof theory, Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar has claimed that the police force's missing guns may have fallen into the sea.
He said that each firearm came with an identification code and the police have not linked these weapons with any criminal activity to date.
"Of the 37 missing guns, ballistic reports show that none of them have been used by criminals.
"The missing guns may not have fallen into the hands of criminals but could have fallen into the sea from boats...and the weapons could not be recovered," he told a press conference in Putrajaya.
While Khalid stated that only 37 firearms were missing, the Auditor-General Report for 2012 released yesterday, placed the figure at 44.
The report also revealed that the police lost 156 pairs of handcuffs and 29 vehicles between 2010 and 2012 amounting to RM1.33 million.
Internal probe carried out
Meanwhile, Khalid explained that the missing items had been investigated by an internal inquiry.
He added that 118 cases were still being investigated, while 94 had been resolved.
The police chief said that those responsible for losing the firearms were instructed to pay for them and so far RM197,984 had been collected.
"PDRM views this issue seriously. We concede that there are weaknesses which must be fixed and we are in the process of studying this," he added.
Earlier, Home Miniser Ahmad Zahid Hamid, who was also present at the press conference, said that his ministry had provided an explanation to the auditor-general.
However, he said that the explanation was not included into the report at the time of printing.
