In victory, Zahid tips hat to pro-opposition websites

Umno vice-president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi who succeeded in defending his position by a landslide yesterday, has thanked pro-opposition elements on social media for making him popular.

"I say ‘thank you' to the portals, magazines and other kinds of coverage used by pro-opposition social media.

"Actually they also helped to make me popular," he was quoted as saying by mStar Online this morning.

He added the issues played by the opposition media had benefited him within Umno.

"I hope after this, they (opposition) will not regret giving me coverage. It benefits me in Umno politics," he was quoted as saying.

He also thanked the print media which he said, also contributed to his victory.

NONEAhmad Zahid had come under attack following a series of controversial tough-talk remarks including a call for police to "shoot first" when dealing with criminals.

Aside from calling Malay underworld group Tiga Line his "friends", he also accused the Chinese and Indians of perpetrating crime while Malays were mostly the victims.

He, together with two of his fellow incumbents Shafie Apdal (left) and Hishammuddin Hussein, succeeded in defending their vice president positions at the Umno polls yesterday.

Ahmad garnered a landslide of 185 votes, followed by Shafie and Hishammuddin with won 174 and 100 votes respectively. There were 191 divisions up for grabs.

Mukhriz was only nine votes shy of unseating Hishammuddin at 91 votes while the other two challengers, Mohd Isa Abdul Samad and Mohd Ali Rustam, were only able to bag seven votes each.
