MCA: Mukhriz's remarks clash with BN spirit

Kedah Chief Minister Mukhriz Mahathir’s remarks that BN must take care of its Malay supporters in the state first over others is out of sync with the ruling party’s spirit, MCA said.

Contrary to his accusations that BN component parties MCA and Gerakan were turning more racist than DAP for criticising his preference to ignore Chinese-language schools, MCA’s central committee member Loh Seng Kok told Malaysiakini that it was Mukhriz who had slanted the BN's working ethos.

malaysiakini interview loh seng kok 061108 04“He is making such remarks to cover or hide his own racist spots (on his body),” Loh (left) said. “His statement that we protect only those who voted for BN is incorrect... we must look after all rakyat in the state, the BN spirit is to help all.”

But when asked to clarify whether MCA thinks Mukhriz is a racist, Loh backtracked and repeatedly emphasised that it’s a “spot”.

However, Loh also sought to help explain the anomaly by saying that Mukhriz expressed a “personal opinion”, possibly for his own political gains.

“I understand that he made such remarks to contest the Umno elections and such statements are useful as bait for the votes of delegates,” Loh said.
No to boycott call

Meanwhile, Loh also retorted at DAP’s Teresa Kok who yesterday urged MCA and Gerakan to boycott BN’s Sungai Limau by-elections campaign. The Seputeh MP had said that Mukhriz’s seemingly hostile attitude towards helping Chinese-language schools showed that the Chinese vote was unimportant.

NONE“We do not, because of an individual, forsake the rights of all voters in Sungai Limau. We want them to choose correctly and believe that BN can still produce the right candidate for Sungai Limau,” Loh said.

Instead, Loh turned the tables and said DAP should be the one to drop backing PAS.

“DAP should boycott Sungai Limau. After PAS won the state in the last elections, it ruled against the spirit of Pakatan, using religion, for example... in Kedah and Kelantan,” he said.

Gerakan’s acting president Chang Ko Youn has also been contacted for comments on Mukhriz’s remark and has replied that a press statement was being prepared.

The state seat in Kedah had fallen vacant on Sept 26 following the death of its incumbent Azizan Abdul Razak due to heart complications, paving the way for the second by-election since the May 5 general election. A by-election will be held on Nov 4, with 12 days of campaigning.

Meanwhile, Mukhriz is gunning for an Umno vice-president position on Oct 19.
