Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Shahidan Kassim has denied hearing Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi calling for "shoot first" when police come across suspected criminals during a security briefing held in Malacca last Saturday.
“I was there (but) I did not notice which part of his speech he said that. More importantly, I was there and stayed awake because I am not the sort of falls asleep easily.
“I heard the speech in full and I did not hear those words,” Shahidan (on the right) told a press conference in Subang this afternoon.
Shahidan was present with Zahid in the controversial security briefing in Malacca.
According to him, writing news stories from the home minister’s speech at the event was unfair and forbidden in Islam.
“It is unfair to quote from a speech in a closed-door event. Did he hold a press conference? So how did you (Malaysiakini) quote from his speech?
“(If you quote from a) recording (of a closed-door event it is) haram,” Shahidan said when asked to comment on Zahid’s statements.
'Zahid should take legal action'
He also said news reports accusing Zahid of making the statements were merely sensational and suggested that Zahid should take legal action.
“Why talk about things that don’t exist? I think it is only meant to create sensation.
“Moreover this is a security briefing, not a village committee briefing. It is a security briefing on the serious crime happening in our country,” he said.
Zahid had said during the briefing that most gang members are Indian Malaysians and they ought to be shot first if there is evidence because most of their victims were Malays.
“What is the situation of robbery victims, murder victims during shootings? Most of them are our Malays. Most of them are our race.
“I think the best way is that we no longer compromise with them. There is no need to give them any more warning. If we get the evidence, we shoot first,” Zahid had said.
Zahid also introduced Shahidan as an Umno supreme council candidate to the attendees and, jokingly, as a member of the “Tiga Line” gang.
Commenting on this, Shahidan said Umno vice-president Shafie Apdal (left) is also known as the ‘pirate from Sabah’ at any Umno function.
“It’s like this… in the Umno general assembly for example, what do people call Shafie Apdal? Pirate. So is Shafie Apdal a pirate?”
“In addition, he is now covering the job of a minister of religious affair. So is a pirate looking after religious affairs?” Shahidan asked.
Earlier, Shahidan officiated the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency Air Station in Subang.
