Shahrizat tells Wanita what to look for in VP candidates, indicates support for HISHAM
PETALING JAYA - Candidates vying the post of Umno vice-presidents must fulfil the criteria that are capable of defending the country's sovereignty, peace and prosperity, said Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil.
The Wanita Umno chief said the three factors were indicators that would influence the movement in making its choice.
"To me, the six candidates offering themselves for the election have their own distinction but Wanita is focusing on the factor that whoever can ensure the country's sovereignty, peace and prosperity will be elected...that's the message of Wanita Umno Malaysia," she said at a media conference which was also attended by Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, here today.
Earlier, Shahrizat together with the Wanita leadership held a closed-door meeting lasting almost two hours with Hishammuddin, who is also defending his vice-presidency at the Umno Supreme Council election on Saturday.
Asked whether the statement meant that Wanita Umno is attempting to maintain the status quo of the three incumbent vice-presidents, Shahrizat said the statement was fair to all the candidates, and in fact respected the stand of all the delegates who would be casting their votes.
Besides Hishammuddin, others who would be defending their posts as vice-presidents are Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.
Others contesting for the vice-presidents' posts are former Melaka chief minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam and former Negeri Sembilan menteri besar Tan Sri Isa Samad and Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Mukhriz Tun Mahathir.
On the issue concerning the resignation yesterday of 14 of the 15 committee members of the Kalabakan Wanita Umno division, who had won in the election last Saturday, Shahrizat said that so far the Umno headquarters had not received an official report on the matter.
As such, she asked the people concerned to submit their official protest letters to the Umno Election Committee as soon as possible for further action. – Bernama
