Unofficial: Zahid off to strong start, incumbents ahead


With voting for the Umno polls over and counting underway, preliminary results indicate that incumbent vice-president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is off to a strong start.

NONEUnofficial results show that Ahmad Zahid (left) is ahead of his five challengers by reaping over one third of the divisions that have announced their results.

There are a total of 191 divisions.

Ahmad Zahid's strong lead is followed by the other two incumbents, Shafie Apdal and Hishammuddin Hussein.

Below is the unofficial results compiled by Malaysiakini:

1. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi - 8
2. Shafie Apdal - 5
3. Hishammuddin Hussein - 4
4. Mukhriz Mahathir - 3
5. Mohd Ali Rustam - 2
6. Mohd Isa Samad - 0

As of 3pm, Ahmad Zahid has secured the support of the Bukit Bendera, Cheras, Bentong, Tambun, Kampar, Ipoh Barat, Tapah and Batu Gajah divisions.

Meanwhile, Shafie's five divisional votes came from Tambun, Kampar, Ipoh Barat, Tapah, Batu Gajah and Hishammuddin's four divisional votes were from Bukit Bendera, Bentong, Cheras and Tapah.

Among the three challengers, Mukhriz is leading the pack with three divisional votes, namely Tambun, Kampar and Ipoh Barat.

On his heels is Mohd Ali Rustam with two divisional votes from Bukit Bendera and Batu Gajah.

Mohd Isa Samad has yet to garner the support of any division.

Some 146,000 delegates cast their votes earlier today.

Aside from the three vice-presidential positions they are voting for, delegates will also elect 25 Umno supreme council members as well as their divisional leadership.

According to Umno Online, Umno executive secretary Ab Rauf Yusoh said official results will only be announced from 10pm.
