We may be old but we have the aspirations & thinking of the young - Zahid
KUALA LUMPUR - Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said although they are old, the three vice-presidents actually have the aspirations and thinking of the young.
"Although we comprise figures or politicians who are above 50 years old but our thinking, taste and work always take into consideration the taste and pattern of thinking of the younger generation," he told reporters when met at the media centre in conjunction with the 2013 Umno elections at the Putra World Trade Centre here Sunday.
Ahmad Zahid, 60, who was re-elected for a second term along with Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal, 56, and Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, 52, said their re-election would give them the opportunity to uphold the aspirations of the Malays and Bumiputeras represented by Umno.
He said the faith in them would be used to help Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and his deputy Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to continue the struggle of Umno specifically in winning over 6.5 million new voters ahead of the 14th general election (PRU-14).
"..and definitely, our presence in the leadership organisation and structure will continue to help strengthen the presidential institution and translate activities towards Umno's relevance with the target group comprising those who will be voting for the first time in PRU-14," he said.
The election this time saw Ahmad Zahid, who is also Home Minister, obtaining 185 votes while Mohd Shafie (Rural and Regional Development Minister) and Hishammuddin (Defence Minister) obtained 174 and 100 votes respectively.
The trio defeated Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Mukhriz Tun Dr Mahathir (91 votes), former Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Tan Sri Isa Samad (seven votes) and former Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam (also seven votes).
