Local stars now shine in Perkasa

Several local artistes have joined Perkasa in conjunction with the right-wing group's launch of its Arts and Heritage Bureau.

Among them are director and actor Zulkifli M Osman, artiste Fauziah Nawi and singer Ebby Saiful.

Zulkifli who was present at a ceremony for the bureau's launch in Kuala Lumpur last night, said he hoped Perkasa can be a platform for artistes to bring their grouses to the government, especially directly to ministers.

Zulkifli who will serve as the bureau's deputy president II said artistes had previously attempted to raise their concerns with the government but were faced with bureaucratic constraints.

"We are trying to overcome a situation in the industry which is facing a glass ceiling. Perhaps through this bureau we can succeed in breaking that.

"Normally, our issues can only reach up to the secretary-general, director-general or political secretary only - it seldom goes right to the top.

"The leadership (among artistes) in the past was not vocal enough," he told journalists when met.

Perkasa's latest bureau will be led by the 1980s actor Don @ Abdullah Hussein who is also a former member of pop band Carefree.

Don has been a member of Perkasa since the organisation's early days.

Also present at the official launching yesterday were actors Shaharudin Thamby and Baharuddin Omar, artiste Ruminah Sidek, actor and producer Yusof Haslam (left) and comedian Imuda.

Baharuddin said he had been a member of Perkasa since the Arts and Heritage Bureau was first set up last month while Yusof said he was present to show support but had yet to submit his membership.

The audience at the function was shown a video presentation entitled ‘The Fate of Our People’ which told of the sufferings of artistes who died due to sickness.

Ruminah also presented a monologue to the audience entitled ‘The homeless artiste’ for about 10 minutes.

The event concluded with a dialogue session among representatives of the film and drama industry.

The panelists including Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali, Yusof and Don.
