Ninety-year-old cheated of life savings totalling almost RM4mil

PETALING JAYA: A senior citizen lost her life savings of almost RM4mil after she was duped into believing she was an accomplice in a money-laundering syndicate.
Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Nik Ezanee Mohd Faisal said the 90-year-old retiree had deposited RM3.83mil of her life savings into seven bank accounts between April 20 and June 15 after receiving a call telling her that there was a package with her name sent from Perak to Sabah.
He said the victim was told that her MyKad and ATM card details were on the package and the caller then connected her to two others claiming to be police officers from the Perak police headquarters.
He said the two, who identified themselves as "Sgt Ho Mum Foo" and "Insp Herman Lee", said they were attached to the Commercial Crimes Investigations Department in Perak.
They also claimed that a former bank employee, whom they said had been arrested, had used her details in a money-laundering syndicate.
"The callers then told the victim that police would detain her for 45 days if she told anyone about the case," he said.
Frightened by the threats, the retiree then transferred her money to the accounts provided by the scammers.
ACP Nik Ezanee said police are actively tracing the suspects and advised the public not to easily believe such threats.
"The scammers are now targeting senior citizens who may not be wise to their tactics and tricks.
"Please call the police if you receive such calls," he said. - Star

Section 17A of MACC Act well-received by organisations

Malaysiakini

Section 17A of the MACC Act 2009 - which can hold commercial organisations liable if an employee or associate is found to be involved in corruption - has been generally well-received, says MACC Senior Assistant Commissioner (Public Education Division) Mohd Nur Lokman Samingan.
"However, some have raised concerns over the lack of case references as it is a new law. But the MACC has already given briefings on Section 17A," Lokman (above) said in an interview on MACC.fm today.
"Nevertheless, organisations can defend themselves if they can show that they have 'adequate procedures' in place to prevent corruption in their operations," he added.
Meanwhile, he said organisations can refer to the guidelines on the anti-corruption procedures provided on the Governance, Integrity and Anti-Corruption Centre’s (GIACC) website.
The law which came into effect on June 1, can hold a commercial organisation liable to a fine of not less than 10 times the value of the bribe or RM1 million, whichever is higher, or imprisonment for up to 20 years, or both.

Salleh cancels application to join PKR

Malaysiakini

Former Sabah chief minister Salleh Said Keruak has cancelled his application to join PKR after pondering deeply and taking into account the political landscape of today including the internal turmoil in PKR.
Salleh said the decision was made in April, and he said with the cancellation he remained without a party since leaving Umno in 2018.
“Lately, many have asked me about my political stand in the light of the political landscape of the country including Sabah.
“In March 2020, I asked for my application to be postponed so that I could meet up with fellow comrades-in-arms and discuss our direction in Sabah.
“Then in April 2020, I requested that my application to join PKR be revoked. With the cancellation of the application, I have remained partyless since I left Umno in December 2018,” Salleh said in a recent blog post on sallehsaid.com today.
Salleh applied to join PKR in October last year, almost a year after he and the majority of Sabah Umno leaders left the party.
Salleh said he applied to join PKR last year because at that time PKR was part of the Federal government, adding that Sabah should build strong ties with the Federal government in order to continue developing and remaining competitive.
"I chose it (at the time) for the sake of the continuation of co-operation between Sabah and the Federal government," he said.
Salleh, a former federal minister, said whatever decision he made concerning (joining) a party at this time was based on careful consideration as well as taking into account the views of his comrades and the grassroots.

Malaysiakini

The Shah Alam High Court today set July 27 to hear the suit filed by the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) against former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak’s daughter, Nooryana Najwa, for her to pay RM10.3 million in unpaid income tax for the assessment years 2011 to 2017.
Judge Che Mohd Ruzima Ghazali fixed the date during the case management today.
The court set July 27 at 10am to hear the case, he said, and also ordered the defendant to file the written submission before the date.
The IRB filed the suit on July 24 last year, claiming that Nooryana Najwa, 32, failed to submit the Individual Income Tax Return Forms to the IRB, under Section 77 of the Income Tax Act 1967 for the years of assessment from 2011 to 2017.
It contended that the defendant had not paid the amount of income tax owed, including the increase, worth a total of RM10,335,292.36.
The plaintiff is seeking from the defendant a sum of RM10,335,292.36, interest on the sum of RM10,335,292.36 at a rate of five percent per annum from the date of judgment, cost, and other relief deemed fit by the court.

Padang Besar, Durian Burung ICQS open for commercial and cargo vehicles

Malaysiakini

The special ministerial meeting on the implementation of the movement control order (MCO) has decided to open the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security Complex (ICQS) at Padang Besar, Perlis and Durian Burung, Kedah.
Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Ismail Sabri Yaakob, however, said they will open for only commercial trading and cargo vehicles.
“The agencies involved have been informed of the decision for further action,” he said in a statement today.
Ismail said the meeting also agreed that Malaysians who are in Singapore and wished to return do not need to apply for a MyPass permit from the Malaysian High Commission.
On the Compliance Operations Task Force headed by police, he said 39 individuals were detained for violating the recovery MCO with three in remand and 36 received compounds.
Among the recovery MCO offences were pub and nightclub activities involving big crowds which were difficult to practise social distancing and activities infringing the standard operating procedure (SOP).
Police had conducted 67 roadblocks under Operasi Benteng nationwide and inspected 40,527 vehicles to curb the entry of undocumented migrants, Ismail said.
The government will take stern actions against any parties attempting to cross the border illegally through back roads, he added.
The defence minister said there were 28 public sanitisation operations yesterday covering 23 zones in nine states including Sabah, Malacca and Terengganu.
Meanwhile, 456 Malaysians returned from abroad yesterday with 161 individuals coming back through Johor and they were ordered to undergo home quarantine.
“Police had conducted 1,006 home quarantine inspections for SOP compliance and found all were adhering to it,” he added.
Ismail said the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) had checked 74 construction sites throughout the country and from the total, 61 sites complied with the SOP, five were found violating it and were given warnings while eight more were no longer in operation.

Bersatu AGM set for Sept 27 amidst membership imbroglio

Malaysiakini

Bersatu led by Muhyiddin Yassin has set Sept 27 date for the upcoming annual general meeting (AGM) which had been postponed following the coronavirus outbreak.
Party secretary-general Hamzah Zainuddin (above) announced the date today, despite the ongoing legal contest by disputed chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad, disputed secretary-general Marzuki Yahya and four others over their terminated memberships.
The party’s election, division assemblies and AGM had to be postponed after the Registrar of Societies (ROS) suspended all organisation activities to June 30 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The AGM was initially slated to be held from June 15 to 28.
In a statement, Hamzah said the Bersatu supreme council meeting yesterday decided that branch assemblies would be resuming from July 10 to July 26.
Division assemblies meanwhile will commence on Aug 22, Youth division assemblies on Aug 15 and Women’s division on Aug 16.
“The AGM will take place on Sept 27 (Sunday) while the Youth and Women AGMs on Sept 26 (Saturday),” Hamzah said.
It was reported earlier this month that Mahathir, Marzuki, disputed deputy president Mukhriz Mahathir, disputed Youth chief Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, as well as disputed supreme council members Maszlee Malik and Amiruddin Hamzah, had filed a “wrongful termination” suit in court.
Following this, they also filed an application for an interim injunction to maintain the status quo pending the disposal of their main legal action.
They want the court to declare they were still legitimate Bersatu members holding their original positions in the party.
In response, Muhyiddin, who is also prime minister, and several other Bersatu leaders had applied to strike out the legal challenge by the six.
Of the six, Marzuki was booted by the party on March 18, while Mahathir and the remaining four had their memberships "nullified" for sitting on the opposition bench during the one-day Dewan Rakyat sitting on May 18.
On June 4, the Bersatu supreme council affirmed the “immediate termination" Mahathir and the four as well as the decision for Bersatu to leave the Pakatan Harapan coalition to form the new Bersatu-led Perikatan Nasional government.
Previously, the ROS confirmed that Mahathir had stepped down as Bersatu chairperson in February.
Mahathir led a small band of Bersatu leaders and supporters who were against the move by Muhyiddin’s faction to remove the party from the Harapan coalition in a move which triggered the collapse of the previous government.
Mahathir won uncontested the post of Bersatu chairperson in March while Muhyiddin was challenged by Mukhriz, the then deputy president. - Mkini

Only two new Covid-19 cases but MOH warns of worsening global situation

Malaysiakini
CORONAVIRUS | Malaysia today reported two new Covid-19 cases, the fifth time the country recorded only a single-digit increase in cases in the last week.
However, Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah warned that this was not the time for Malaysians to let their guard down as the global situation is worsening.
"As stated by the World Health Organization director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus during a virtual briefing, the Covid-19 global pandemic is not yet over.
"Globally, Covid-19 pandemic cases are increasing. He warned that the Covid-19 pandemic across the globe will drag on.
"Therefore, the Health Ministry urges everyone not to be careless just because there is a downtrend of Covid-19 cases in Malaysia," he said in a statement today.
Noor Hisham said the new cases today involve one imported and one local transmission, both involving Malaysians.
The local transmission was discovered during a screening of a patient who was referred to the Kota Belud Hospital in Sabah.
The new infections put the cumulative cases to 8,639.
Noor Hisham (below) also reported 20 Covid-19 patients have been discharged from hospital, bringing the total recoveries to 8,354 people, a recovery rate of 96.7 percent.
He said 164 people are still under treatment of which four are the intensive care unit. One of them needs a ventilator to breathe.
No new death was reported, maintaining the death toll at 121 for 19 consecutive days.
Noor Hisham reminded the public that most of the remaining sectors will reopen on July 1 and stressed it was imperative that they comply with the standard operating procedures (SOP).
"Considering that more sub-sectors will reopen on July 1, the government needs the public's cooperation to ensure we can break the chain of Covid-19 infections in Malaysia," he said.
Noor Hisham urged the public to continue heeding the Health Ministry's advice to avoid crowded places, confined spaces and close conversations, or the 3Cs.
He also urged Malaysians to practise the 3Ws - Wash, Wear and Warn - which is to regularly wash their hands, wear a face mask in public and heed health warnings.
Last Friday, the world saw a new record high of Covid-19 cases, recording 195,089 infections in a single day.
The number of daily cases has been creeping upwards since the start of June as new waves of outbreaks hit countries trying to reopen their economy.
To date, the world has recorded 10.4 million cases with more than 508,000 deaths. 5.68 million people have recovered.

TUESDAY JOKE - 10

A sexually active woman tells her plastic surgeon that she wants her vaginal lips reduced in size because they were too loose and floppy. Out of embarrassment she insisted that the surgery be kept a secret and the surgeon agreed.
Awakening from the anesthesia after the surgery she found 3 roses carefully placed beside her on the bed.
Outraged, she immediately calls in the doctor, "I thought I asked you not to tell anyone about my operation!"
The surgeon told her he had carried out her wish for confidentiality and that the first rose was from him: "I felt sad because you went through this all by yourself."
"The second rose is from my nurse. She assisted me in the surgery and empathized because she had the same procedure done some time ago."
"And what about the third rose?" she asked.
"That's from a man upstairs in the burn unit. He wanted to thank you for his new ears."

Ahmad is almost 29 years old. His friends have already gotten married, but Ahmad still just dates and dates.
Finally, a friend asks him, "What's the matter, are you looking for the perfect woman? Are you that particular? Can't you find anyone who suits you?"
"No," Ahmad replies. "I meet many nice girls, but as soon as I bring them home to meet my parents, my mother doesn't like them. So, I keep on looking!"
"Listen," his friend suggests, "Why don't you find a girl who's just like your dear ole Mother?"
Many weeks go by and again, Ahmad and his friend get together. "So, Ahmad, did you find that perfect girl yet - one that's just like your mother."
Ahmad shrugs his shoulders, "Yes, I found one just like mom. And my mother loved her, and they became fast friends".
"So, should I congratulate you? Are you and this girl engaged yet?"

"I'm afraid not. My father can't stand her!"

A fellow walks into a bar feeling very down. As he walks up to the bar the bartender asks, "what's the matter?"
The fellow replies, "well I've got these two horses (sniff, sniff), and well... I can't tell them apart. I don't know if I'm mixing up riding times or even feeding them the right foods."
The bartender, feeling sorry for the guy, tries to think of something he can do.
"Why don't you try shaving the tail of one of the horses?"
The man stops crying and says, "that sounds like a good idea, I think I'll try it."
A few months later he comes back to the bar in worse condition than he was before.
"What's the matter now? "the bartender asks.
The fellow, in no condition to be in public, answers, "I shaved the tail of one of the horses (sob, sob), but it grew back and I can't tell them apart again!"
The bartender, now just wanting him to shut up or leave says, "why don't you try shaving the mane, maybe that will not grow back."
The fellow stops crying, has a few drinks, and leaves. A few months later the fellow is back in the bar. The bartender has never seen anybody in this sorry state. Without the bartender even asking the fellow breaks into his problems. "I.. I shaved the (sob) mane of one of the (sniff) horses, and... it... it... grew back!"
The bartender, now furious at the guy's general stupidity, yells, "for crying out loud, just measure the stupid horses. Perhaps one is slightly taller that the other one!" The fellow cannot believe what the bartender has said and storms out of the bar.
The next day the fellow comes running back into the bar as if he had just won the lottery.
"It worked, it worked!" he exclaims.
"I measured the horses and the black one is two inches taller than the white one!"

"I saw this bloke chatting-up a cheetah.
I thought: 'He's trying to pull a fast one.'"

Why do we tell actors to 'break a leg?'
Because every play has a cast.

"My doctor said to refer to my nervous breakdown as an episode.
To be honest, it was more like a season finale."

"British people are like coconuts.
Hard on the outside but sweet once you crack them.
Also often found full of alcohol and always holding an umbrella."

Why did an invisible man turn down the job offer?
He couldn't see himself doing it!

A young girl who was writing a paper for school came to her father and asked, “Dad, what is the difference between anger and exasperation?”
The father replied, “It is mostly a matter of degree. Let me show you what I mean.”
With that the father went to the telephone and dialed a number at random. To the man who answered the phone, he said, “Hello, is Melvin there?”
The man answered, “There is no one living here named Melvin. Why don't you learn to look up numbers before you dial”?
“See,” said the father to his daughter. “That man was not a bit happy with our call. He was probably very busy with something and we annoyed him. Now watch….”
The father dialed the number again. “Hello, is Melvin there?” asked the father.
“Now look here!” came the heated reply. “You just called this number and I told you that there is no Melvin here! You've got lot of guts calling again!” The receiver slammed down hard.
The father turned to his daughter and said, “You see, that was anger. Now I'll show you what exasperation means.”
He dialed the same number, and when a violent voice roared, “Hello!”
The father calmly said, “Hello, this is Melvin. Have there been any calls for me?”
