MCMC gets six months to review changes to laws regulating Internet users.
HULU TERENGGANU: The Communications and Multimedia Ministry will speed up a study on proposed amendments to the Communications and Multimedia Act 1988, which regulates broadcasting and Internet use.
It proposes to table the amendments in Parliament this year.
Deputy communications minister Jailani Johari said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission had been given six months to conduct the study, which would mainly take into account the rampancy of cyber offences.
He noted that the existing penalties for cyber crime were inadequate to deter irresponsible elements.
“Increased penalties and clearly-defined offences particularly relating to social media can hopefully curb cyber crime and diffuse antagonism among the society,” he told reporters Saturday.
Jailani said he would leave it to new MCMC chairman Halim Shafie to do the needful based on his vast working experience.
