The Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for the Rompin by-election, Datuk Hasan Arifin, wants the Chinese community to give him a chance to prove his ability to serve the people.
"Give me a chance to serve. I can use the platform as member of Parliament to voice the problems and needs of the Chinese community here," he said.
Hasan was speaking at a dinner event with voters organised by the Tanjung Gemok MCA branch at the Hitaco Seafood Restaurant tonight.
Also present was MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.
Hasan said BN had always ensured the harmony and welfare of every community in Malaysia and it was important to maintain that situation so that it would benefit future generations.
In the by-election, Hasan is challenged by PAS candidate Nazri Ahmad to fill the vacancy created following the death of the incumbent Tan Sri Dr Jamaluddin Jarjis, who was killed in a helicopter accident in Semenyih, Selangor on April 4.
Meanwhile, Liow said that PAS’s attitude in not meeting the Chinese voters in the constituency showed a betrayal of the community which had supported it in the last general election.
He said it also showed that PAS was not concerned about the Chinese votes while BN had always considered every vote important to ensure victory with a big majority.
"In the campaigning for the by-election this time, they never even went to the areas of the other communities to get votes, they have ignored the people here, it is BN which is concerned," he said. – Bernama
