TAPAH: Forty-three students and a 50-year-old teacher of Sekolah Menengah Sains (SMS) Tapah suffered food poisoning after having “roti jala” and chicken curry for supper at the school’s dining hall last Saturday.
Perak Health, Public Transport, Non-Muslim Affairs, National Integration and New village Committee chairman Dr Mah Hang Soon said they were among 111 people who went for supper at the dining hall.
However, he said, only 44 came down with food poisoning when they started to complain of diarrhoea, vomiting and dizziness yesterday morning.
The affected students are aged between 13 and 17.
He said 32 of the students were sent to Tapah Hospital for treatment and another to a private hospital.
Eleven others, including the teacher, were placed at the sick bay at the school hostel for observation, he added.
Following the incident, Dr Mah said the kitchen operator had been ordered to cease operation for two weeks and food samples from the dining hall had been taken for analysis.
He was met by reporters during a visit to the kitchen area of the dining hall of the school today.
Pending the outcome of the investigation, Dr Mah said school authorities would use the services of an outside caterer to provide food for students at the hostel.
Earlier, Dr Mah visited the victims at the Tapah Hospital.
Meanwhile, State Health director Dr Juwita Ghazali said an evaluation of the hygiene at the kitchen of the school hostel conducted last March 21 rated it at 81 per cent.
“But, when we went yesterday, the rating was 60 per cent,” she added.
