PETALING JAYA: Sarawak-based Opposition party SWP has been dealt a blow in the run-up to the state election after its president, Larry Sng, resigned from the party.
In a Facebook post on the Sarawak Workers Party page, Sng also announced his withdrawal as the party’s Bukit Goram candidate.
“The last five days have been one of the most difficult journeys of my life,” he said in announcing his resignation and withdrawal from the race.
“All party decisions will now be decided by the secretary-general Munan Laja.”
The Bukit Goram seat had been billed as one of the seats to watch due to the wealthy Sng family’s legacy and influence in the area, combined with PBB’s track record of not having lost a state or parliamentary election since 2001.
Larry’s father, Sng Chee Hua, was the Pelagus assemblyman for 10 years and spoke fluent Iban.
In the 1991 state elections, Sng took on the powerful PBB and its Pelagus candidate, a young Alexander Nanta Linggi.
In the coming election, Larry, a close ally of former Chief Minister Taib Mahmud, had been poised to take on PBB’s Jefferson Jamit.
Jamit is the cousin of Alexander, who is federal deputy rural and regional development minister.
FMT’s attempts to reach Larry were unsuccessful.
