Hopefully, Bersatu and Umno will cancel each other out

YOURSAY | ‘I can only call this a massive missed opportunity to unshackle the chains of racial politics.’
Hardboiled: It's actually understandable why this party was formed. They are to achieve two main objectives. To be an exact but separate option for anti-Umno Malays.
This increases their chances of catering to the three million prospects on the other side of the river. You cannot do this if your party is multiracial.
"We want them (non-Malays) to play a role in giving their ideas and whatnot, I think they do have such things (ideas)," said former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin.
As much as I like having more anti-PM Najib Razak supporters, but this statement shows ignorance or disregard for the non-Malays’ wants and needs. As if Parti Bersatu doesn't know it.
Just like 1Malaysia, I see the likelihood that Bersatu is also going to be about only ‘bersatu-ing’ the Malays, and not serving Malaysians.
Tao Student: Why should non-Malays join the new party while they can only give ideas but not allowed to take up any post? This is a blatant discrimination.
It's short sighted to only targeting Umno members. How far can it go? History has clearly told us splinter parties of Umno (Parti Negara and Semangat 46) will go nowhere.
Fairman: Yes, non-Malays should join the party as associate members, but at the same time they must ensure they are registered voters and cast their ballots to elect MPs and assemblypersons.
So even though they cannot decide on the office bearers of Bersatu, they can influence the policies of the party.
Slumdog: Muhyiddin said the party is open to all races but he only wants the ideas of the non-Malays who join his party.
As their reward, he would make them associate members but they cannot contest for posts or vote in the party polls. Wow, this man is so magnanimous.
GE14Now!: Bersatu is Umno in a different guise. Umno is a proven wolf and over the years it has thrown off its sheep skin to reveal exactly what it is - a thieving, corrupt, thug-inspired and gangster-led party.
Bersatu, which is really an offshoot of Umno, is just replaying Umno's earlier strategy. If Bersatu gets into power, it will eventually reprise the sheep skin strip-off act and then they will be seen in their proper skins.
Much as I am happy that former PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad is out to get Najib and hopefully destroy Umno, I cannot help but be wary of another Umno emerging from this.
My sincere hope is that Bersatu and Umno will annihilate each other and that another coalition that is truly inclusive rebuild this corruption ravaged country.
Vent: Sorry, Muhyiddin, I won’t be contributing ideas to a 'Malay first' party. You see, I'm 'Malaysian first' so there bound to be a clash of world views and ideology.
Can Malays be so bereft of good ideas if your appeal is anything to go by?
But I’m afraid the days of riding piggy back on us while dangling the carrot in front and at a very safe distance from us are long gone.
Go it alone and let’s see where you will end up. But we will be watching that space with much interest.
CQ Muar: We need your support to strengthen this new political party to bring down those incorrigible and corrupted leadership.
We also welcome your idea and contributions to fortify the party, and you are welcomed to join us as associate members.
But you can't hold post or have voting rights. It sounded quite like Umno, except the "associate oneself with" provision.
What happens thereafter when this new party is established and become powerful? Will the Arabs be subsequently kicked out by the camel?
It’s hard to predict, but potentially possible. We've seen it all; perhaps Bersatu will be an exception, hopefully.
ANA: As a Muslim Malaysian, I can only call this a massive missed opportunity to unshackle the chains of racial politics that belong to a bygone era.
While racially-based parties served their communities well post-independence, to continue with such thinking today simply reflects how little we have matured since 1957.
To apply a racial criterion to Bersatu "first tier" membership is shocking, deeply flawed and painful. How is that in any way attractive to the other races?
When are we going to grow up and be driven by values, performance and results as the basis for decision-making?
A great opportunity was here for the Malays to open up a new frontier that would truly embrace multiculturalism.
Our immaturity and insecurity is there for all to see. As a nation, we do well in "talking the talk" but we have a long way to go before understanding the meaning of "walking the walk". - Mkini
