KUALA LUMPUR ― Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has accused the Opposition of spreading rumours in an attempt to undermine his close relationship with Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
In a statement, Najib said that he had strong faith in the deputy prime minister’s loyalty, and that the latter was not like some former Umno leaders who were driven by personal agendas.
“The opposition are envious of the absolute solidarity at last week’s Umno General Assembly. So it’s not surprising that they are now spreading rumours in an attempt to undermine my close relationship with the Deputy Prime Minister,” Najib said.
He did not elaborate on what the alleged rumours were, but urged party members to close ranks and be alert to the “dirty tricks” used by the enemies of Umno.
“They have tried everything in their power to divide us. But they do not understand Umno and the loyalty of its real members ― those who stand with the party and its democratically-elected leadership through thick and thin.
”The opposition are now so desperate and in such disarray that they have been forced to ally themselves with the man who jailed their own leaders,” Najib added.
During last week’s Umno assembly, Zahid urged party members to pledge unwavering loyalty to Najib as “Allah” willed him to be their leader.
