PKR assemblyperson Dr Afif Bahardin has expressed disappointment with the media's coverage of the sex scandal implicating the party's deputy president Azmin Ali.
He rued how children were exposed to this since the newspapers were distributed in schools.
The Penang executive councillor recalled how he joined the Reformasi movement in 1998 to fight gutter politics but is still confronted with the same issue two decades later.
"Recently, I was watching TV with my kids. Gutter politics was all over the channel. For the first time, I felt the news is not appropriate for my kids. I had to switch to Cartoon Network.
"My seven-year-old can read and gutter politics is all over the news. Mind you, this paper is also being distributed in schools. Why the need to be so detailed and elaborate? What do we achieve by this?"
"What kind of generation are we bringing up in schools with daily exposure to this gutter politics? I am sick of it. And because I am frustrated, I expressed it in my tweet," he added.
Afif was explaining his tweet critical of The Star's interview with Haziq Abdullah Abdul Aziz, which contained salacious details of his alleged sexual encounter with Azmin.
He also questioned the need for giving this issue prominent coverage.
"Even as a reporter, are you not tired of this? There are so many issues to report, why should this take centre stage?" he asked.
"We already said to leave it to the police. Let the matter be discussed in court should it lead to there," he added.
Afif also concurred with Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad that the video clips of the alleged act were part of a "political ploy to bring down Azmin".
"Those behind the video, if they are in power or wish to exploit the issue to gain power, they should be removed," he added.
Azmin, who is also economic affairs minister, has dismissed the videos as a nefarious plot to ruin his political career.
He is also convinced it is an inside job. - mkini
