KOTA KINABALU: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) vice-chancellor Prof Dr D Kamarudin D Mudin today confirmed his term had been shortened by the education ministry and he will leave the office on July 29.
Speaking at a special session at the university today, Kamarudin said he was forced to make the announcement early to prevent negative rumours surrounding the issue.
“This issue has to be clarified because of wild gossip by certain people. I hope the university staff are not affected by this change and will continue carrying out their responsibilities.
“With regard to the shortening of my term as vice-chancellor, I agree with the decision made by Education Minister Maszlee Malik and believe the decision was made professionally, taking into account the interests of the university.”
According to Kamarudin, the change in management of government organisations is a normal process and the university will always acknowledge and accept the ministry’s decisions.
“All my plans to further strengthen UMS, including its governance, involved a three-year plan (until 2020). Although my term has been cut short, I hope the work plan will be pursued by UMS’ academic and administration staff.
“Changes like curriculum reviews need to be continued because we want to produce graduates who are equipped with knowledge and skills to meet the current job requirements. They are meant to boost our graduates’ marketability,” he said.
Kamarudin hoped the new vice-chancellor will be a person of integrity and the issue of appointing his successor will not be politicised.
He said university staff should be more professional in terms of appointing officials to the highest positions and not try to play politics by supporting certain individuals for personal gain.
Such action, he said, could cause disunity among the university staff and also set a bad example to the students.
A former anaesthetist, Kamarudin was appointed to the chair on June 19, 2017, becoming only the third Sabahan to hold the post. - FMT
