Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh has called for a moratorium on all development projects in flood-affected areas within her constituency.
This is unless the government deals with flash floods in Kuala Lumpur in a serious manner.
In a statement today, Yeoh said that 10 locations in Segambut were flooded on Monday due to extraordinary rainfall.
However, despite the extraordinary rain, she said the authorities' response has been underwhelming.
"All responses so far by the authorities have merely mentioned using existing SOP and resources to fight this extraordinary rainfall pattern.
"Queries were met with standard responses - 'pending drawing of design, pending appointment of contractors or employing existing frequency in cleaning and maintenance works'.
"Doing the same thing expecting different results is an act of sorcery," she said.
She said residents had suffered significant losses in recent months as floodwaters carrying thick mud swept their homes and destroyed their belongings.
Hence, she said unless the government gets their act together, there should be a development moratorium in Segambut, including for the proposed MRT3 project.
Kuala Lumpur has been regularly hit by flash floods since December.
The government's go-to response has been that the current drainage systems were all functioning but could not cope with excessive rainfall.
Kuala Lumpur City Hall is reportedly in the process of appointing a consultant to redesign the drainage system in the capital to better deal with increased rainwater.
However, Federal Territories Minister Shahidan Kassim said the consultant would have 12 months to complete a study - meaning that it will be some time before any significant measures to mitigate flash floods in the capital take place. - Mkini
