Plantation workers protest outside Nga's ministry, demand re-housing details

Some 15 plantation workers from Bestari Jaya, Selangor, staged a protest outside the Local Government Development Ministry in Putrajaya today.

Accompanied by PSM deputy chairperson S Arutchelvan, the workers, armed with a banner criticising the minister for not being serious in resolving their woes, demanded proper details on the re-housing project promised to them.

This refers to the Tanjong Karang 1 People’s Housing Project (PPR) proposed to the workers in 2018 by then-minister Noh Omar.

The workers, who submitted a memorandum to one of Nga’s officers, expressed disappointment with the minister for providing a “half-hearted” response in Parliament when asked if his ministry had allocated a budget for the project.

“He (Nga) said the ministry has submitted an application for Tanjong Karang 1 PPR, Bestari Jaya to the Economy Ministry for consideration.

“The question was about the budget but the minister’s answer was about the PPR’s application which is an outdated matter.

“We would like the minister to focus on two things - when will the budget be approved and when will this project begin construction?” the workers said.

According to Arutchelvan, the group has called for a meeting with Nga in the next seven days to discuss the ongoing issue.

He said if Nga did not heed their demands, they will hold a demonstration outside of Parliament during the next sitting in June.

"We expected something better from Nga, (we are) totally disappointed," Arutchelvan added.

The plantation workers also mentioned that they have been raising the issue of the development’s delay since 2019.

In the past, they have also reached out to the PPR’s supposed developer Berjaya Corporation Bhd, former minister Zuraida Kamaruddin, the Finance Ministry, as well as the Economic Planning Unit.

The workers said they were able to get almost all parties involved in the project on the same page except for the Local Government Development Ministry.

“We were able to get the land and construction issue resolved. The only issue that is not resolved is the financing for the project,” the group added. - Mkini
