Video of Syed Saddiq in traditional Sabah and Sarawak outfits goes viral

The Muar MP showcases traditional costumes from Sabah and Sarawak in a collaborative video with cosplayer Pudds for Hari Kaamatan and Gawai.

In conjunction with Sabah's Hari Kaamatan today (May 30) and Hari Gawai on June 1 and 2, Muar Member of Parliament Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has made an appearance in a video by popular homegrown cosplayer and content creator Pudds (@deadpudds) on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok.

The 45-second video, featuring Syed Saddiq in traditional costumes from Sabah and Sarawak, has garnered over 160,000 likes on TikTok at the time of writing. It was released two days ago.

The duo showcased three traditional outfits from Sarawak, representing the Iban, Orang Ulu, and Bidayuh tribes. They also wore three traditional outfits from Sabah, including the Kadazan Dusun, Kadazan Papar, and Bajau Samah attires.

The video features the Sarawakian folk song Puteri Santubong and Sayang Kinabalu (Jimmy Palikat).

Pudds said on her Instagram: "These are the chosen traditional outfits to shoot for this project as it is very hard to find more traditional clothing from all the tribes of Sabah and Sarawak. One day, I promise to go over to your states and show off more of your beautiful traditional clothes!

"Thank you to our dear YB Syed Saddiq for agreeing to participate in this video project with me and taking time off your very hectic schedule to squeeze a few hours for this. Really appreciate it!"

The video has also garnered nearly 80,000 likes and attracted over 2,000 comments from netizens on Pudds' Instagram.

One Instagram user, @nora_razifloh, expressed her admiration, stating: "Love sgt (so much). So proud of you guys to show all of these traditional costumes to the world."

Another netizen, @liberationx commented: "Good one. Malaysia must treat our friends in Borneo with dignity and equality in the spirit of fraternity and camaraderie."

The collaboration with Syed Saddiq follows a four-part series of videos released by Pudds over the past four weeks, highlighting traditional outfits from various Malaysian states. These videos showcased garments such as Selangor's baju kebaya labuh, baju ulek mayang from Terengganu, Minangkabau costume from Negeri Sembilan, baju kebaya Nyonya from Penang, and baju kurung Teluk Belanga from Johor.

Pudds commented: "Although I might not be of Malay or Peranakan lineage, I still proudly say I was born and raised in Malaysia alongside my Malaysian friends and family! They have never been shy to introduce me to their cultures, in return, I will never be shy to show off their culture and our shared Malaysian heritage to the world."
