Terms of settlement ‘P&C’, say Naik’s lawyers

Lawyers for Muslim televangelist Dr Zakir Naik (left) and Bagan Dalam assemblyman Satees Muniandy have confirmed that a 2019 defamation lawsuit has been resolved amicably.

PETALING JAYA: Lawyers acting for Dr Zakir Naik have confirmed that the Muslim preacher has resolved his defamation suit against a DAP assemblyman amicably through a consent judgment recorded in open court yesterday.

They, however, refused to divulge the terms of settlement agreed between the two parties.

Both parties agreed that the terms of the settlement should remain private and confidential, lawyers Akberdin Abdul Kader and Rafie Shafie told FMT.

Akberdin and Rafie were responding to a request for confirmation after lawyers acting for Bagan Dalam assemblyman Satees Muniandy commented on the settlement after the proceedings in court ended yesterday.

Naik filed the suit against Satees in 2019 over the assemblyman’s remarks contained in an FMT report, “DAP man blames LTTE crackdown on Zakir Naik”.

Satees was also sued over an article published by Malaysiakini in the same year, in which he said the preacher should be deported from Malaysia for suggesting that Malaysian Indians were more loyal to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi than to former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Naik claimed Satees’s statements had ridiculed him and depicted him as a threat to the country’s security.

Akberdin said the settlement reached in court yesterday was similar to a consent judgment recorded in Naik’s defamation suit against former human resources minister M Kula Segaran in July 2022, which was also to remain confidential between the parties.

The suit against Kula was in connection with an FMT report titled “DAP: No reason for Malaysia to protect Zakir Naik”, published on April 17, 2017 and a press release issued by Kula in 2019.

He sought compensation and damage claims from Kula, as well as a court injunction prohibiting him from publishing and distributing four defamatory news articles in any medium. - FMT
