Police have found no criminal elements in the death of Kee Kok Thiam, an alleged associate of Low Taek Jho (Jho Low) and 1MDB suspect.
Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan confirmed that Kee had died of high blood pressure at Sungai Buloh Hospital on May 29.
“The police classify the case as an ordinary death where preliminary investigations show no criminal elements are involved in this death,” he said in a video circulated to the media today.
High blood pressure is a major risk factor for stroke.
Previously, an MACC source told Malaysiakini that Kee is suspected to have embezzled money from 1MDB and SRC International, via the account of a company named Wright Shaw Limited.
Witnesses at 1MDB-related trials have also testified on Kee’s alleged role in the scandal.
In February, for example, former AmBank relationship manager Joanna Yu Ging Ping told the Kuala Lumpur High Court that Kee was among the people depositing money to keep then prime minister Najib Abdul Razak’s accounts topped up and prevent his cheques from bouncing.
Kee was reportedly deported from Macau on May 3 for overstaying his visa, and was ordered to present himself to the MACC’s headquarters on the same day. He had been abroad for five years.
He was then arrested and his house was searched, but was released with no charges against him “at this time”.
According to Al Jazeera, Kee had told the MACC that he had met several 1MDB suspects in Macau, namely Low, Eric Tan Kim Loong, Casey Tang Keng Chee, Geh Choh Heng and Nik Faisal Ariff Kamil. - Mkini
