Avoid words that challenge, insult Selangor royalty, says state council president

PETALING JAYA:The public should refrain from uttering insulting words and those that challenge the Selangor royal institution, says Datuk Ng Seing Liong.

"The Council hopes that the rakyat will not easily issue words that are insulting and question the capability of the Selangor royal institution with regards to the appointment of the Selangor Mentri Besar," said Ng.

The president of the Selangor Council of Justices of the Peace said this in a statement on Monday (July 24).

Ng said that the Council fully supports a statement by Selangor’s Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah that His Royal Highness has the prerogative to appoint any candidate qualified to be chosen as Mentri Besar.

He added that such an appointment would be based on the provisions of the Laws of the Constitution of Selangor 1959 and on past accepted practices.

"The candidate must be a Malay, a Muslim and adheres to the Laws of the Constitution of Selangor," he said.

Recently, caretaker Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor courted controversy over a speech he made on July 11, where he allegedly “belittled” the Sultan of Selangor for having appointed Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari as the Mentri Besar.

On Friday (July 21), Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reforms) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said announced that existing laws may be repealed and even new ones introduced to tackle the 3R issues.

Recently, concerns were raised by certain quarters over the possible blatant use of 3R issues, particularly during the upcoming Aug 12 state elections.

Meanwhile, Ng said the Council also extends its well wishes to Sultan Sharafuddin who is scheduled to leave for London on July 28 to undergo treatment. - Star
