MACC chief Azam Baki does not see Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's announcement of RM450,000 in grants in Terengganu as a form of graft.
The top graft buster merely viewed it as federal allocations.
"This is a government which can implement initiatives it deems necessary for the people.
"To me, there is no issue in giving grants because it is a government initiative, and if it is an allocation that the government has approved, there is no element of corruption," Azam (above) was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian.
Zahid, who is also the rural and regional development minister, found himself in hot soup over his speech when announcing the allocations at an event on Friday.
After revealing his ministry will give RM250,000 to the Terengganu Youth Council and RM200,000 to motorcycle teams throughout the state, Zahid said there would be more aid if youths at the event vote for the “blue and red wave” in the Aug 12 state polls.
Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman - who has been critical of Zahid's announcement - did not take kindly to Azam's response.
"Let's be real, 'aid' announced in the middle of an election campaign with a condition being their votes.
"This is clearly an inducement to buy votes. Don't normalise corruption. What is wrong is wrong," he tweeted yesterday.
Zahid denied that he was normalising corruption, or that his announcement was corrupt. - FMT
