Mahasiswa Keadilan Malaysia (MKM) has called for an immediate probe against Perikatan Nasional (PN) chief Muhyiddin Yassin over the awarding of a multi-million ringgit vehicle fleet concession during his administration, which is now the subject of a lawsuit.
"We suspect there could be elements of corruption involving Muhyiddin in this matter, or why else would his government cancel the cheapest tender offer and award it to another company quoting a far higher price tag?
"We urge the MACC to launch an immediate probe against Muhyiddin, as we suspect a lot of hidden facts can be unravelled from him and his family regarding the matter.
"Our hope is those who loot public funds and assets will be brought to justice, and not allowed to walk free while cheating the rakyat with their political propaganda," said MKM vice- chairperson Yuveraaj Pillai after lodging a police report on the matter at the Dang Wangi police headquarters this afternoon.
According to Yuveraaj, MKM had lodged 20 police reports nationwide against the former prime minister, over the awarding of a vehicle fleet concession to Spanco Sdn Bhd at RM700 million higher than a consortium consisting of Berjaya Group and Naza Group, to which it had been initially offered.
Asked about why MKM was wading into the matter, Yuveraaj said it is because the issue could possibly involve public funds that can be put to better use.
"As we may all know, our universities and educational institutes are mostly old, and in poor condition.
"We need funds to fix and maintain these establishments. The funds involved in this matter is huge, and at least 20 universities can be maintained with that much money," he said.
According to Yuveraaj, MKM will lodge an online report with the MACC tomorrow.
Last week, Berjaya Group founder Vincent Tan said that the consortium was picked to manage the fleet concession through a letter of intent (LOI) in 2018. The contract reportedly involved around 12,500 vehicles worth an estimated RM300 million annually, starting after the fifth year.
According to Tan, the Naza-Berjaya consortium won the contract with the lowest offer and was given the LOI by the Finance Ministry.
However, when the government changed and Muhyiddin became the prime minister, the LOI was terminated and the tender was given to Spanco for RM700 million more, he claimed.
The tycoon has since filed a suit against the Finance Ministry and Spanco and hoped for a favourable decision from the courts.
Taiping MP Wong Kah Woh called for MACC to investigate the matter, as he said Tan's allegations showed alleged non-compliance with the government tender process under the former premier's leadership. - Mkini
