Azmin: I'm not running away from Bukit Antarabangsa

Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) newly announced Hulu Kelang candidate Azmin Ali said he is not running away from his incumbent seat of Bukit Antarabangsa.

He said this is because Hulu Kelang falls under the Gombak parliamentary seat, where he was MP for three terms.

“I would like to stress that Hulu Kelang was my main seat since 1999 and while I was Gombak MP for three terms since 2008 (until 2022), Hulu Kelang was part of the parliamentary constituency so the question of my running away does not arise,” Azmin (above) told reporters after attending the candidate announcement for Selangor PN at Taman Medan tonight.

Azmin’s first state seat in 1999 was Hulu Kelang before he became the Bukit Antarabangsa assemblyperson from 2008 till now.

Earlier this year, the former Selangor menteri besar announced that he was going to take a break from politics after losing the Gombak seat in the 2022 general election.

However, as state polls drew nearer, speculation arose that Azmin would be contesting in Hulu Kelang - something which was finally confirmed in the official announcement tonight.

When asked why he decided to make a comeback in the state polls, Azmin said he did plan to retire but his party wanted him to contest.

“The party gave its opinion that they wanted me to contest in this state poll, so I complied with my party’s president and leadership council to join this election,” he said.

Azmin also remained coy when asked whether he was PN’s candidate for Selangor menteri besar.

He said the focus right now should be on solving the rakyat’s problems and not on getting positions.

“And for us to implement policies that care for the rakyat, we need to win the elections first and win with convincing numbers,” he said.- Mkini
