Crack in govt coalition showing, says ex-MIC leader

Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan are allies in the unity government but two BN member parties are sitting out the coming state elections.

PETALING JAYA: The decision by MCA and MIC to stay out of the Aug 12 state elections has inadvertently exposed a crack in the government coalition, claims a former leader of MIC.

S Sunther said the decision of the two Barisan Nasional parties showed that Pakatan Harapan could do without the help of MCA and MIC to secure the support of non-Malay voters.

Sunther, the son of former MIC deputy president S Subramaniam, said he believed that DAP is confident of pulling the Chinese votes without MCA’s backing, as shown by the voting pattern at the 2022 general election.

“Likewise, PKR and DAP don’t need MIC’s support to woo Indian voters. Perhaps this could also be a statement that Indian votes don’t matter in the six states. PH only needs Umno badly to deliver the Malay votes.

S Sunther.

“Either way, a visible crack is seen in the unity government following the decision by MCA and MIC to stay out. They better repair that crack fast if they want to remain steadfast,” he told FMT.

MCA obtained only 665,436 (4.29%) of the 15.5 million votes cast at the national general election last November, while MIC managed only 172,176 votes (1.11%).

The two parties announced last week that they will stay out of the elections in Selangor, Penang, Negeri Sembilan, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu set for Aug 12.

They said they wanted to focus their efforts and resources on strengthening their parties to face the next general election, due by 2027.

Sunther, who left MIC in 2018 and joined Warisan last year, said no component of any coalition should be treated badly, including MCA and MIC.

“It’s a given that anyone being treated badly will consider leaving their coalitions. This is a fact of life. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s unity government must take cognisance of this development.” .

While MCA has said a firm “no” to joining Perikatan Nasional, he pointed out that MIC has yet to respond to the invitation issued by PAS election director Sanusi Nor. - FMT
