In his final speech, Salahuddin tells students 'positions are temporary'

Two days before he breathed his last, Salahuddin Ayub reminded university students of the importance of humility.

The 61-year-old domestic trade and cost of living minister, who succumbed to a brain haemorrhage last night, emphasised that positions are not permanent.

“Whether it’s becoming a minister or the highest civil servant, or even the inspector-general of police, we have to remember there is a time limit to those positions.

“Earlier, I arrived in an official car with a bodyguard and driver. But think, if I was arrogant about being a minister, how long will this last? Until judgement day?

“Just remember that in whatever position we hold, it is only temporary,” he told an event at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) in Kedah on July 21.

Salahuddin, who was also Amanah’s deputy president, urged students to do their best in opportunities that arise.

“For me, I happened to be in politics for 40 years. I picked the rakyat because the rakyat picked me,” he said.

Huge loss

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who knew the deceased for decades, described his passing as a huge loss.

“He was known for being of an esteemed character, be it to his friends or foes. A strong figure who works and is very obedient to trust and responsibility.

“Rest now, my friend,” he posted on Facebook.

Salahuddin, who leaves behind his wife Fatimah Taha, six children and 11 grandchildren, was laid to rest at the Jalan Sulong Muslim cemetery at Kampung Serkat in Pontian, Johor, this morning.
