Gerakan president Dominic Lau kicked off his party re-election campaign yesterday, urging members to choose continuity and stick with Perikatan Nasional.
In a short video clip uploaded to his Facebook yesterday, he said the party's direction was now clear after the parliamentary election last November.
"I became the party president when the party was at its lowest ebb. Although I wanted to lead the party out of the slump, our party had to search for the most suitable political positioning for itself due to years of political turmoil.
"After the 15th general election, I believe that our direction is very clear - to go through ups and downs together with PN.
"I am now seeking re-election (as party president). I hope all comrades can entrust me with another three years, giving me time to complete the tasks at hand and be accountable to the party, party members, and myself," he said.
Lau thanked party members for supporting his work since 2018 and apologised for the mistakes that he had made.
Party polls on July 15
Gerakan will face a crucial leadership election on July 15 - barely two weeks before the party faces the six state polls.
Nominations of the leadership election will take place tomorrow.
The incumbent party president is expected to be challenged by Federal Territories Gerakan chief Lau Hoi Keong, Malacca party chief Michael Gan and former party secretary-general Liang Teck Meng.
The leadership election was supposed to take place in 2021.
However, upon appeal, the Registrar of Societies allowed the party to postpone its election up to eight months from a parliamentary election. - Mkini
