Madius: Send homegrown 'Steve Bannon' into lasting retirement

Comparing Dr Mahathir Mohamad to Steve Bannon, the US ultra-right propagandist who created conspiracy theories to get Donald Trump elected, Wilfred Madius Tangau, who accused the ex-premier of “spewing venom”, urged voters to defang him for good.

The Tuaran MP said Mahathir, who lost his deposit in the last general election, has morphed into “Malaysia’s Bannon in his desperation to fight off his political irrelevance.”

“We can send Mahathir into permanent retirement if 60 percent of eligible voters who voted for the unity government parties and 26 percent who did not vote in GE15 (15th general election) join forces to vote down hatred spread by him and his fellow bigots like (caretaker) Kedah menteri besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor and PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang.

“Malaysia-loving voters in Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu, Penang, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan, on Aug 12, please remember Mahathir’s venom and go out to vote down extremism. Send our Bannon into permanent retirement,” he added.

Madius (above) also cited Mahathir’s purported letter dated July 20 which was published in veteran journalist A Kadir Jasin’s blog.

In the letter, Mahathir warned that a Chinese Malaysian can be the prime minister by GE17.

However, Madius described this as nothing more than fear-mongering.

“How can that be possible when Chinese Malaysians make up less than a fifth of the population and less than a sixth of the Parliament and get insulted as ‘pendatang’ every other day by Mahathir and his company?

“Truth never matters to Bannons worldwide. Only fear and hatred matter.

“They want to terrify half of the population into fearing and hating the other half. If the hated half despairs and quits, Bannons win fully,” he added.

Madius reminded voters of British statesman Edmund Burke’s words that “the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”

“Let’s treat every venom spat out by Mahathir and company as a call for each and every one of us to go and vote down extremism, hatred and lies,” he added.

Mahathir, who worked with Pakatan Harapan in GE14, is now rooting for Perikatan Nasional (PN), the coalition led by Muhyiddin Yassin, whom he once branded a traitor.

The 98-year-old politician spoke at a PAS ceramah in Kelantan last week, calling on Malay voters to unite for PN to make a clean sweep in the state polls. - Mkini
