MP: Muhyiddin's poultry farming foray exposes PN's folly

Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin’s recent venture into poultry farming has come under fire from a PKR MP who accused the former prime minister of being tone-deaf to the plight of the less privileged.

Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung said Muhyiddin should know that not everyone could afford a farm or be allowed to rear chickens by local authorities.

“The former prime minister should understand that not everyone has a farm or a property big enough like Muhyiddin’s to rear between 30 and 40 chickens.

“Additionally, not everyone can rear like Muhyiddin without being penalised by the local authorities,” said Lee (above).

During a ceramah in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan on Sunday, Muhyiddin claimed that his farm was capable of producing 40 eggs a day in order to address egg shortages.

“I want to show that we can solve the problem by fixing it ourselves, but not everyone is capable of rearing 30 to 40 chickens.

“But the question is what is the government of the day doing to solve this problem... During our time, we used the Price Control Act (1946),” said Muhyiddin.

Muhyiddin cited egg shortages as one of the cost-of-living woes faced by the public today, based on a survey of 1,200 people.

Although Muhyiddin did not name the survey, it is likely a reference to a recent study by Institut Masa Depan Malaysia (Masa) which was founded by Muhyiddin and former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad in 2018.

The study also had 1,200 respondents. Two key Masa figures - Marzuki Mohamad and Khairul Syakirin Zulkifli - wrote about the findings of the study in a paper for ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute (ISEAS).

Lee said Muhyiddin’s attempt to discredit the present administration was a slap on his own face because egg shortages started due to the previous government’s missteps.

“When the new government took over in November 2022, the country had a shortage of 157 million eggs. (Muhyiddin’s) Perikatan Nasional was part of the previous government.

“If Muhyiddin were concerned with the rakyat then, the government would have done something about it.

“Muhyiddin should realise that things got better after the new government was installed and there are rarely any egg shortages now,” said Lee. - Mkini
