N Sembilan Amanah branch chiefs threaten to boycott state polls

More than a dozen Amanah branch chiefs in Paroi, Negeri Sembilan, have threatened to boycott the state election if the party maintained its candidate of choice.

They are opposed to state Amanah Wanita chief Norwani Ahmat being fielded in the seat in the upcoming polls, and want incumbent Mohamad Taufek Abd Ghani retained.

"We cannot accept Norwani and if Taufek is not chosen as the candidate, I will not go out to vote.

"If she (Norwani) contests the Paroi state seat, I don't know how is she going to win," Sinar Harian quoted Seremban Selatan Amanah branch chief M Kalai Selvan as saying at a press conference.

He was speaking on behalf of about 15 branch chiefs who are opposed to Norwani contesting the Paroi seat.

Elaborating, Kalai Selvan said he does not mind being sacked for being vocal about the grassroots stance.

The press conference was called as a "last resort" to hopefully get Amanah to switch the candidate, just four days ahead of nomination day, he added.

'Norwani doesn't care'

Taman Sri Kasih Amanah chief Mokhtar Hassan echoed Kalai Selvan's remark, saying more party members are expected to protest against the decision.

"Norwani is a leader who does not care about her branch chiefs. Her credibility in the Paroi state seat is unsatisfactory, while Taufek is well known and has shown good performance (during his stint)," Mokhtar said.

This is not the first time the choice of electoral candidate had become an issue in Negeri Sembilan.

Previously, incumbent Ampangan assemblyperson Mohamad Rafie Abdul Malek hit out at the PKR leadership over the decision to not let him defend his seat in next month's election.

According to Rafie, who is also a state executive councillor, it was common knowledge he had worked hard to help people in the constituency and to develop the state in general.

He accused "a certain individual" of working to remove him from the Negeri Sembilan administration.

Rafie, who is also PKR's deputy Seremban division chief, won the Ampangan seat in 2018. PKR announced Tengku Zamrah Tengku Sulaiman would be fielded instead at the election on Aug 12. - Mkini
