PSM sec-gen to contest Kota Damansara

PSM secretary-general Sivarajan Arumugam will contest Kota Damansara in the upcoming state elections, the party announced today.

This is Sivarajan's second attempt at the seat, which is significant to PSM.

The party has been active in the state constituency - and the Sungai Buloh parliamentary constituency it is in - for almost two decades.

In 2004, when PSM had a working partnership with then opposition coalition Pakatan Rakyat, former PSM chairperson Nasir Hashim contested on a PKR ticket for an unsuccessful bid for the Subang parliament seat - now known as Sungai Buloh.

Four years later, amid a wave of support for Pakatan, Nasir would contest on a PKR ticket again, this time in Kota Damansara, and won.

However, Nasir would only serve one term.

His re-election bid in 2013, again under a PKR logo, was thwarted after PAS - who was then a member of Pakatan - also fielded a candidate for the seat.

This led to BN capturing the seat that year.

In 2018, PKR, PAS and PSM - each now having parted ways - contested in Kota Damansara.

The contest ended in a victory for PKR's Shatiri Mansor with over 61 percent of votes.

PSM's candidate for the seat that year, Sivarajan, only bagged 1 percent of votes, causing him to lose his deposit.

PSM is partnering with Muda for the upcoming state polls as a third force against the Pakatan Harapan-BN pact and PN.

It is unclear who Harapan will field in Kota Damansara, as there is speculation that PKR will give up the seat. - Mkini
