PETALING JAYA: Full red carpet treatment will be provided if it is true that there are investors willing to invest RM500 billion in Langkawi, says international trade and investment minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz.
He said the amount, if true, would create history and set a record for Malaysia.
He said no investment of as much as RM500 billion had ever been approved throughout Malaysia’s history, including Mahathir’s two stints as prime minister.
The highest was a total of RM309 billion of investments throughout the country in one year.
“I do not mind who brings in this investment, be it Mahathir, the government, or the opposition, as it is the people who ultimately benefit from investments,” he said in a Facebook video.
“Therefore, I kindly request Mahathir to share the investors’ details. For investments in the millions, we welcome them with open arms, so for a RM500 billion investment, we will roll out a red carpet from the airport to the hotel.”
On Saturday, Mahathir claimed that he met a few people who had been interested in investing RM500 billion in Langkawi. However, they ended up heading to Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines instead because no minister was willing to meet them, Mahathir alleged. - FMT
