Sanusi: PAS didn’t sacrifice ideals when working with DAP, unlike Umno

PAS has never sacrificed its principles even when the party entered political cooperation with DAP, said PAS election director Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor.

This was unlike Umno, Sanusi reportedly said, claiming that the Malay-centric party was seen to be submissive to DAP since they started working together after the 15th general election.

According to him, PAS had a history of leaving its pact with DAP when the latter objected to the Islamist party's vision to establish an Islamic country.

They then entered another pact after DAP was willing to accept PAS' ideals, and formed what used to be known as Pakatan Rakyat.

"We have never let down our principles, never ever sacrificed our principles just to cooperate with them (DAP).

“If you can't accept what we stand for, then you get out. We went our separate ways with DAP because of policy issues.

"This is what I meant about wala' (obedience). We cannot give our obedience to DAP, to the extent that you want to meddle with our fundamental values, our struggle," Harakah Daily reported him as saying.

The article published on its website earlier today, however, did not have a direct quote of Sanusi speaking about Umno.

It also did not contain any elaboration by Sanusi or any examples of Umno being subservient to DAP.

In 1999, several opposition parties including PAS, DAP and PKR (then known as Parti Keadilan Nasional) formed Barisan Alternatif to face the 10th general election together.

DAP later left Barisan Alternatif in September 2001 when it was unable to resolve the Islamic state issue, the concept of which was mooted by then-ally PAS.

PAS, DAP and PKR entered another pact in 2008 to form Pakatan Rakyat, which again collapsed in 2015 following a dispute between PAS and DAP.- Mkini
