PKR deputy secretary-general Muhammad Zakwan Mustafa Kamal is rumoured to be the preferred candidate for the Telok Ayer Tawar seat in the upcoming Penang state election, according to a PKR insider.
The source claimed that Zakwan (above), who is a press secretary to Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, was mentioned as a potential candidate to replace his father Mustafa Kamal Ahmad, who is the incumbent Telok Ayer Tawar state assemblyperson.
This is to ensure Pakatan Harapan can defend the seat, added the source.
“Mustafa was said to be retiring from politics due to the age factor.
“It is not impossible for (Zakwan), who is 26, to be named as a candidate for Telok Ayer Tawar this time,” they told Malaysiakini.
Young members
Harapan chairperson Anwar Ibrahim is expected to announce the list of Harapan candidates for Penang by the end of this week.
“If this information is true, then it is in line with PKR’s decision to give opportunities to the party’s young members,” the source said.
Mustafa Kamal won the state seat in the 14th general election after defeating BN candidate Zamri Che Ros, Mohamad Hanif Haron (PAS), and Lee Thian Hong from Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM), with 2,203 majority votes.
