Stalking victim's complaint against apathetic cop a ‘misunderstanding'

Serdang district police chief A Anbalagan said claims that his officers had behaved unprofessionally while taking a report from a woman who alleged she was being stalked was a "misunderstanding".

He told Malaysiakini the issue has been resolved amicably with the complainant.

Police are also investigating the woman's claim that she has been stalked by a man since early this year.

"There was a misunderstanding. The investigation is being conducted under (Section) 507A of the Penal Code.

“The complainant has been engaged and understands the present situation,” he briefly said.

The woman earlier took to social media to say that the personnel who took her report had made comments which among others, said it was not an issue because the alleged stalker did not make physical contact with her.

The officer had also allegedly asked the complainant to take off her mask and remarked that she was facing the issue because she is attractive.

In a statement later, Anbalagan stated that the police are investigating the alleged stalking under Section 507A of the Penal Code.

He said the complainant alleged the suspect often watched her, and entered her place of work to stalk and harass her.

Malaysia's anti-stalking law came into force on May 31.

The new Section 507A defines stalking as repeated acts of harassment intended or likely to cause distress, fear, or alarm to any person. - Mkini
