PETALING JAYA: Bersatu assemblyman Abdul Rashid Asari’s recent pledge of support for Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari is designed to boost support for Amirudin ahead of the coming PKR polls, says a well-placed source within the party.

“The polls were initially expected to happen next year, but there is talk now that they may take place at the end of this year,” the source said.

He said at least two other assemblymen from Bersatu are likely to pledge support for Amirudin.

Rashid’s decision to back Amirudin came days after Bersatu voted to amend its constitution to state that MPs and assemblymen will have their membership automatically stripped if they support any other party or policy not aligned with Bersatu’s position.

The amendment, which is subject to the approval of the Registrar of Societies, came after six Bersatu MPs pledged their support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

However, another source from Bersatu said Rashid, who is the assemblyman for Selat Klang, pledged support for the state government out of unhappiness with his own party.

“Ever since the story of a certain Bersatu leader visiting the Prime Minister’s Office broke out, a lot of things have happened in the party in favour of that leader, from his appointment as state chief to the appointment of people aligned with him to the supreme council,” said the source.

He said this is because Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin is concerned that “the leader may bring assemblymen over to the other side” if things do not go his way.

The source said this has led to unhappiness among many within the party, and to Rashid’s pledge of support for Amirudin.

Last month, FMT reported that a prominent Bersatu leader was seen at Perdana Putra, allegedly to negotiate the “survival” of certain party leaders until the next Bersatu elections. - FMT
