Police are not investigating convenience store chain KK Mart for selling socks with the word Allah printed on them.
This is as no complaints were lodged over the matter, Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan told Malaysiakini.
KK Mart on Wednesday apologised for the oversight, after it went viral on the internet and has stopped selling the product.
In a statement addressed to "all KK Mart customers, especially Muslims", the convenience store said a vendor had placed the socks from Mranosock on consignment at its Bandar Sunway outlet.
"We have contacted the vendor for further explanation on the matter.
"KK Mart also thanks the public for their criticism and comments on the matter.
"We apologise and will ensure this doesn't happen again," said KK Supermart & Superstore Sdn Bhd, which operates the 24-hour stores.
KK Mart also published an apology from the vendor, Batu Pahat-based Xin Jiang Chang Sdn Bhd which admitted their fault in "not carefully inspecting the product procured from China".
"We will be more careful and sensitive in the future," the vendor said.
The white ankle socks had the word Allah in both Latin and Arabic script printed in black and were sold for RM6.99 a pair.
Yesterday, Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Armizan Mohd Ali told the Dewan Rakyat his ministry is checking if KK Mart had broken any laws over the matter. - Mkini
