Dr M's son: Not just me, all Malaysians facing challenges

Mirzan Mahathir believes that landing in MACC’s crosshairs is an opportunity to prove himself.

Describing it as a “challenge”, the son of former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad said all Malaysians are confronted with hurdles.

“I’m doing okay, I just have to take things in my stride,” he said when quizzed on the investigation.

“Not only me but in Malaysia, everyone is facing challenges. Life has chosen me as a challenge, and I just have to accept it and overcome it.

“I have been trying my best to get through this,” he told Scoop at the sidelines of a tennis event in Kuala Lumpur.

Mirzan (above, right), who is the president of the Lawn Tennis Association of Malaysia, said he has never been interested in politics.

No interest in politics

Pointing out that he did not choose to be born into a family which is always in the limelight, the 65-year-old businessperson said he has never been a member of any political party.

“It’s not something that interests me at all.

“All I want to do is business, and I think there is a perception that one intrudes into the other, but I clearly avoid that because I know what my principles are, where I stand, where the borders are, and the importance of not crossing that line,” he added.

Since he is unable to control his perception, Mirzan said he just has to “live with it”.

“What can I do? For me, I just do my work. I have been the head, and also heading many companies, and I have a lot of people depending on the businesses.

“I have to do the best I can, not just for myself but for them too. They are also trying to earn a living and trying to feed their family, and I need to help them.

“I have to do things rightly and make them progress, grow, and become better and assure that they have a place within the company and make sure that they don’t have to worry about where their next paycheque is going to come from.

“This is what I’m trying to do for the people who trust me and have the responsibility, and that’s how I am,” he added.

In January, MACC summoned Mirzan and his brother Mokhzani for questioning although the exact nature of their investigation is unclear.

The brothers were also slapped with an order under Section 36 of the MACC Act, which requires them to declare their assets within 30 days.

The two have since been given an extension.

On Feb 8, Mirzan and Mokhzani issued a joint media statement that collating 43 years’ worth of information is an “impossible endeavour”.

Appealing for patience, the brothers said: “MACC has requested a list of assets going back to 1981, the year our father became prime minister.”

The statement was in response to MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki’s warning that the two could face criminal proceedings if they fail to meet the deadline.
