Selangor Bersatu rep's support for MB does not weaken party in state: Afif

Selat Klang assemblyperson Abdul Rashid Asari’s support for Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari does not weaken Bersatu’s position in the state.

Bersatu supreme council member Dr Afif Bahardin said the matter was disappointing but the party remains strong in Selangor.

“Selat Klang’s action certainly disappointed us and disappointed the voters in Selat Klang. But we will continue our work and service there and also represent the Malaysians in Selangor.

“Actually there are many more new people that we will present from time to time.

“The fact is his actions have no effect. It is more of a personal decision,” he told Malaysiakini.

Yesterday, Rashid voiced his support for Amirudin, saying his decision was made based on several factors.

He explained that he also made the decision for the well-being of his constituents, who would benefit from a stable and strong state government.

Rashid served as the Selangor Bersatu chief from September 2020 until January this year, before being replaced by Azmin Ali.

Preventing future defections

On March 2, Bersatu introduced an amendment to its party constitution, aimed at preventing future “defections” of its elected representatives.

Party delegates unanimously supported a motion to amend Article 10 of the Bersatu constitution, which stipulates matters of resignation and dismissal of party members.

Previously, six MPs from the party backed Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, without leaving Bersatu.

They are Zulkafperi Hanapi (Tanjung Karang), Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang), Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar), Mohd Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang), Zahari Kechik (Jeli), and Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan).

Bersatu is also seeking the seats of these six MPs, party president Muhyiddin Yassin said.

The Selangor assembly has 56 seats, 22 of which belong to the opposition.
