KUALA LUMPUR: The government has been urged to expedite the tabling of a bill to make preschool education compulsory and overcome the problem of school dropouts.
Tan Kar Hing (PH-Gopeng) said doing so would ensure that the existing preschool education system’s infrastructure and quality would be in line with the projected needs of students in the coming years.
He said it would also solve the problem of preschool teachers not having the minimum educational qualifications.
“The government has targeted for the nation’s preschool teachers to at least be qualified under the Early Childhood Care and Education Scheme by 2025. However, until today many teachers still do not have these qualifications.
“We must expedite the tabling of this bill to overcome the problem,” he said in his debate on the king’s speech in the Dewan Rakyat.
Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil was previously reported as saying that the Cabinet had on Jan 24 decided to recalibrate the preschool education system to ensure its quality and make it more comprehensive.
Education minister Fadhlina Sidek then said her ministry had formed a special team to speed up education reforms. - FMT
