Indian lawmakers call for action against Islamic preacher

A group of Indian lawmakers, mostly aligned with the coalition government, today urged the Home Ministry to take strict action against independent preacher Muhammad Zamri Vinoth Kalimuthu.

Jelutong MP RSN Rayer said this is due to Zamri’s (above) recent remarks that allegedly insulted Hindus in the country.

“(In line with that) we members of Dewan Rakyat and Dewan Negara, together ask for Zamri to be prosecuted. This is over a series of his TikTok videos in which he ‘explained’ about Shiva Lingam, which is worshipped by all Hindus,” Rayer said in a press conference in Parliament.

Also present at the session were Klang MP V Ganabatirau, Segamat MP R Yuneswaran, Batu MP P Prabakaran, as well as senators C Sivarraajh and R Arunasalam.

Yesterday, Rayer questioned the lack of action taken by the Home Ministry against independent preachers like Zamri and Firdaus Wong, whom he accused of deliberately hurting the feelings of the Chinese and Indian communities, via their religious lectures.

‘Where’s the rule of law?’

During the parliamentary session, Ganabatirau also questioned why action is not taken against those who insult religions other than Islam.

“These two individuals constantly criticise religions other than Islam, and after 1,008 police reports are lodged, the cases become NFA (no further action), but those who criticise the other side (Islam) are arrested and jailed within 24 hours.

“Where is the rule of law and fairness for all?” he asked.

Elaborating, Rayer urged the Home Ministry to urgently act on his complaints for the sake of unity, peace and harmony.

“We would like to jointly ask the government, particularly the Home Ministry, to take urgent action against the police reports lodged against Zamri.

“This is because his remarks about Shiva Lingam have insulted the Indian community, as well as the Hindus in the country.”

In response, Zamri has challenged Rayer to prove the claim that he insulted the Hindu people. - Mkini
