KK Mart, socks supplier to be charged with hurting religious feelings

KK Mart and one of its former suppliers are expected to be charged tomorrow with causing religious offence, in connection to the controversial socks bearing the word Allah.

Malaysiakini was made to understand that besides the two companies, the charges would be levelled against two individuals from KK Mart and three from supplier Xin Jian Chang Sdn Bhd.

They would be charged under Section 298 of the Penal Code with hurting the religious feelings of others.

This is punishable with up to one year in jail, a fine, or both.

Additionally, it is understood that those from Xin Jian Chang would be charged under Section 109 of the Penal Code for abetment.

Section 109 states that the punishment for abetting a crime, unless specified, will be the same as the actual offence.

The charges will be made at the Shah Alam Sessions Court.

Two weeks ago, socks bearing the word Allah were found in a KK Mart store.

Following this, mass police reports were lodged following initial police inaction.

One of those spearheading the police report campaign was Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh.

Both KK Mart and Xin Jian Chang apologised for the incident and alleged it was due to oversight.

Previously, two individuals had been jailed for six months and fined RM12,000 and RM15,000 respectively for posting insulting comments on the socks issue. - Mkini
