No reason to extend foreign worker deadline now, says Saifuddin

KULIM: With a now-simplified process for registering foreign workers in place, there is no longer any need to extend the deadline for the migrant worker recalibration programme, says home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

He said the extension sought by employers was no longer needed as they no longer had to apply for workers’ permits through agents, Bernama reported.

The home ministry had recently announced that unused quotas for foreign workers would be cancelled on June 1, along with active quotas for foreign workers for whom levies have been paid but whose visas have not been issued by the end of March.

Saifuddin said under the previous process, “when an employer needs a foreign worker, they will apply for the quota from the human resources ministry; once approved, they pay a levy to the immigration department and then apply for a ‘visa with reference’.

“Now since they are the ones applying, they will apply faster, and they will receive the results faster as the application only takes two working days,” he told reporters after a police Ramadan event here today.

Sensitive issues at mosque Ramadan events

After the police event, Saifuddin gave a reminder that all religious programmes at mosques throughout Ramadan should be conducted with awareness about sensitive issues on race, religion and royalty.

He said many posts uploaded by individuals on social media touched on these 3R issues, which could lead to legal action if reported to the authorities.

“The practice of posting 3R-related content on social media needs to be tackled so that people can be more careful, which will also help the police in their duties.

“Today, the police have set up a special task force directly under Bukit Aman. This means investigations into any complaints touching on 3R must be completed within a week,” he said. - FMT
