GEORGE TOWN: Food businesses in Penang will be allowed to operate without limits on operating hours on the condition that they respect the fasting month, the state government said today.
Penang deputy chief minister Mohamad Abdul Hamid said there is no set operating time limit and food traders do not need to only open business from evening until night.
“Traders can do business from the morning. However, out of respect for Ramadan, Muslims may not eat in public but can buy takeaway food to be eaten at home,” he said. “Muslims who eat in public can be arrested for disrespecting Ramadan.”
He was speaking after launching a Respect Ramadan campaign at the Jamek Kampung Rawa mosque. Mohamad said enforcement officers would be placed in each of the six districts to carry out daily monitoring. - FMT
